Visiting
the post office in Portugal is a straightforward process and
the opening hours are usually between 8.30 in the morning to
6 in the evening. It is usual in the main cities to find
that there is at least one post office that is also open on
a Saturday until lunch time.
If you are just looking to buy stamps you can also get them
from shops which have the red horse horse sign outside. In
Portuguese the word for stamp is selo and the word for post
office is Correios and this is the national state owned
Portuguese postal service.
In rural areas deliveries and collections can be few and far
between so many people find that it is far easier to
actually rent a post box and simply go and collect the post
themselves.
There are many other services available at the Portuguese
post office just the same as the UK.

There are certain things that you should be aware of when
sending letters and parcels when visiting the post office in
Portugal and one of the main differences to other countries,
especially the UK, is the Portuguese postal code or codigo
postal as it is known. This is written in the form of seven
digits with the first digit representing one of the nine
postal regions in Portugal. The other digits represent
various factors concerning the location.
When posting a letter in Portugal you will find that the
standard shape of the letter is a rectangle and if the
letter that you are sending is a different shape it may cost
more to send. As in the UK the thickness of the letter is
also taken into consideration and if it is more than 5mm it
should not have any staples or clips used to seal it.
